What Is Diamond Certification
A diamond certificate, also known as a "cert" or grading report,
is an easily understood document that describes the key characteristics of a
diamond. Certificates are prepared by expert gemologists at the world's many
gemological laboratories. Typically, diamonds of a half-carat or more are
considered for certification.
The Assurance You Deserve
Most people are not diamond experts, but everyone wants-and deserves-to feel
sure about the diamonds they purchase. That confidence is what diamond
certification provides. Certification allows non-experts to make educated
diamond buying decisions.
A 20th Century Innovation
It was in 1955 that the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) introduced a
systematic format for grading diamonds. No consistent methods existed prior to
that time. While the GIA remains the best-known diamond-grading laboratory,
numerous highly respected gemological laboratories grade and certify diamonds.
One example is the Hoge Raad voor Diamant (HRD), which is as widely recognized
in Europe as the GIA is in the United States.
